General Rules:
Revised June 3, 2008

1. The Concerto Competition is open to students studying with teachers who are active members of the San Fernando west Valley Branch of the MTAC.

2. There are two divisions; Junior, students through school grade nine and Senior students school grade ten through twelve.

3. Each student is required to prepare a complete movement of a concerto or a concert piece written for his or her instrument and orchestra. The entry fee is $30 per student. The maximum time allowed for each performer is 15 minutes with tuttis cut. Cadenzas must be performed.

4. Students must provide their own accompanists, and teachers must be present at the audition or arrange for a proxy.

5. An original copy of the music (either the solo part, or a piano score) shall be provided for the judges. (No copies permitted).

6. The orchestral score and parts must be readily available for the performance. If there is any doubt as to the availability, the teacher must research the matter, with the help of the chairpersons and conductor, before the audition, to prevent the potential disqualification of a winner, should they be unavailable or too expensive to obtain.

7. Applications are due approximately one month before the audition. The date will be announced in the newsletter.

8. The winners will perform with Maestro James Domine and the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra in one of their regular subscription concerts.

9. Currently, auditions are held in June and the winners play in the first concert of the following fall season.

10. Two judges, chosen from outside the branch will judge the competition, and select the winners to perform with the symphony. The decision of the judges is final.

11. Biographies will be required of the winners, who will be notified by phone the evening of the competition.

12. General recital rules apply to all matters not detailed on this list.
